New Book on the Restoration of the Penobscot River

New Book From the Mountains to the Sea tells the story of the restoration effort to bring back the Penobscot River

A new book, From Mountains to the Sea, captures inspiring stories from the Penobscot River Restoration Project, a collaborative effort first initiated by ASF in the fall of 1999 and culminating 15 years later with the construction of a new river channel around the Howland Dam. It’s a project that balanced fisheries restoration and hydropower production in Maine’s largest watershed.

The project along with subsequent work completed by ASF’s Maine Headwater Project, has improved access for sea-run fish to more than 2,000 miles of habitat. While the Penobscot story continues to unfold as fish populations re-colonize upriver habitats for the first time in 200 years, the book fully captures how this exciting, challenging, and deeply meaningful project to restore the river came to be.

The book will be available 2 Mar. 2021
