Dr. Steve Sutton at Quidi Vidi

Mar 17, 2020

Last month, ASF’s head of outreach and engagement, Dr. Stephen Sutton, delivered a talk to a full house at the Quidi Vidi Brewing Company in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. It was the latest in a series of lectures that Sutton and others have been delivering throughout Eastern Canada and New England as part of the International Year of the Salmon. Check out this video of Dr. Sutton’s talk made and shared by our friends at Outdoor Pros , Newfoundland’s hunting and fishing hotspot with Canada shipping.

The International Year of the Salmon was declared by countries bordering the North Atlantic and Pacific oceans to raise awareness about wild salmon and the issues they face, and motivate people, communities, governments and industries to participate in conservation. The theme of the International Year of the Salmon is ‘salmon and people in a changing world.’ Without people who are willing and able to act on their behalf, wild salmon have little chance of overcoming the threats they face.

Dr. Sutton’s talk, which has been delivered throughout eastern North America, taps into that theme. In this one he focuses on Newfoundland and Labrador, describing the threats to wild salmon, and ASF’s plan to address the root causes of decline, hopefully with the help of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

Thanks again to Outdoor Pros, the Salmonid Association of Eastern Newfoundland, and the Quidi Vidi Brewing Company for making this event possible.
