ISA Forces Cooke to Harvest 1.2 million caged salmon

The company’s Cold Ocean Salmon has suffered a second and third outbreak just days after the first.

Cooke Aquaculture’s Cold Ocean Salmon has reported two more infectious salmon anemia outbreaks at its Newfoundland and Labrador farms.

Following the confirmation July 20 that six cages housing 340,000 Atlantic salmon at its “North of Killbuck Cove” site had been affected by the virus, the company announced Thursday that two more sites have been impacted.

The virus has been detected at the company’s Seal Cove site, just south of Killbuck Cove where three cages house 234,000 fish and also at its Robin Hood Cove site. The company has eight cages at that site holding 611,000 fish.

The company is planning to remove all fish from the three sites immediately.

Cooke Spokesman Joel Richardson told IntraFish July 10 that the fish at the first infected site were market size and scheduled to be harvested.

In April, the Cold Ocean salmon farming operations lost nearly 29 percent of its 550,000 fish, blaming harsh weather events.
