Employment Opportunity: Human Resource Manager

Overview:

The Human Resource Manager will be responsible for planning, developing and managing Human Resources programs, policies and initiatives that align Atlantic Salmon Federation’s workforce with the organization’s objectives. Must ensure compliance with relevant Canadian and U.S. legislation while fostering an equitable, positive, and effective work environment.

Manages Human Resources activities such as recruitment, onboarding, compensation & benefits, performance management, training & development, and special initiatives.  The Manager, Human Resources acts as a change agent, management advisor, and employee resource, providing guidance and solutions that align with the organization’s culture and strategic direction.

 

Responsibilities and Duties:

HR Planning and Projects

  • Develops and recommends legislatively compliant Human Resources strategies, policies, and programs relating to talent acquisition, retention, and development, performance management, compensation and benefits, diversity, employment equity, and other relevant areas.
  • Manages timelines, resources and deliverables for HR-related projects.
  • Communicates project status and outcomes to stakeholders.
  • Partners with leadership to design change management strategies and communication plans in support of new initiatives.

 

HR Advisory and Employee Relations

  • Advises employees and management on day-to-day Human Resources related matters.
  • Collaborates with leadership to determine evolving Human Resources requirements and develop responsive, effective Human Resources strategies.
  • Acts as first point of contact for employee issues and grievances by documenting incidents and escalating them as necessary.
  • Organizes investigations and maintains records of employee relations case outcomes.

 

Training and Development

  • Assists leadership in identifying competency gaps and developing training and development plans.
  • Organizes training sessions, workshops and seminars for employees.

 

HR Administration and Compliance

  • Communicates and applies HR policies and procedures.
  • Maintains all employee records, ensuring data security.
  • Coordinates payroll related matters with Finance.
  • Tracks employee attendance and leaves (vacation, sick, leaves of absence, etc.).
  • Remains current on all relevant federal and provincial/state statutory requirements for Canada and the U.S., ensuring ongoing compliance and recommending changes to policies and practices as needed.
  • Provides guidance to managers and employees on the interpretation of Human Resources policies.
  • Tracks and reports on key HR metrics to inform decision making.
  • Prepares a variety of confidential documents such as offer letters, employment contracts, termination notices, performance letters, total rewards statements, etc.
  • Creates forms, manuals and other documentation in support of Human Resources programs.
  • Manages the termination process.
  • Be an employer representative on the Health & Safety committee.

 

Recruitment and Onboarding

  • Leads recruitment activities to attract and retain top talent.
  • Guides leaders in the creation of job descriptions and recruitment advertisements.
  • Guides leaders in development of talent plans including succession planning.
  • Provides advice and guidance on recruitment and selection procedures.
  • Develops and administers engaging onboarding processes.

 

Compensation and Benefits

  • Provides input into compensation and benefits costing for the budgeting process.
  • Administers employee benefits, periodically reviewing and recommending changes to plan design, carriers, etc.
  • Supports the compensation process by analyzing market data and assisting with job level and salary reviews.

 

Performance Management

  • Organizes and oversees the annual performance management process.
  • Provides performance management guidance to managers including coaching and career development for employees.
  • Oversees the handling of matters requiring corrective action, advising on approaches to resolution when possible.

 

Supervisory

  • No direct supervisory responsibilities.
  • Works independently, seeking guidance on complex matters or decisions having significant impact to the organization.

 

Qualifications, Education and Experience:

  • Post Secondary Degree or Diploma in Business, the Management of Human Resources, or a related field.
  • Minimum 6 years in a senior Human Resources role.
  • Human Resources designation such as Certified Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) is an asset.
  • Experience with managing significant and ongoing contact with, and providing HR guidance and advice to senior management and employees.
  • In-depth knowledge of HR operations and principles, employment laws (both Canadian and U.S.), and best practices.
  • Strong analytical/problem solving capabilities.
  • Excellent communication skills.

 

The position can be stationed in Chamcook, NB or Halifax, NS.  The ability to work both independently and with a team is essential. This position will report directly to the Vice President, Finance & Administration.

This position is available for either part-time or full-time employment, depending on the qualifications of the candidate.

 

Benefits of working at ASF: ASF offers a competitive salary and benefits package including RRSP, vacation, sick leave, and health/dental coverage.  The salary range for the position starts at $70,000 to $100,000.
