Fish are swimming a bit easier in this P.E.I. creek thanks to bridge structure removal
An old concrete bridge structure in Mill Creek, near Souris, P.E.I., is being removed to improve fish passage, particularly benefiting Atlantic salmon.
The project is led by the Souris and Area Branch of the P.E.I. Wildlife Federation, with support from the Canadian Wildlife Federation, the Atlantic Salmon Federation, and the provincial government.
Removing the bridge will restore natural river flow, enhancing high-value salmon habitat crucial for their reproduction and population sustainability.
The project aims to increase fish resiliency to climate change and improve overall ecosystem health, which also benefits human communities by reducing flood risks.
This initiative is part of ASF’s new Headwater Canada program, addressing fish passage barriers across Canada, including P.E.I.
