On July 2nd Valerie Ouellet joined ASF as Vice-President of Research and Environment. A native of Quebec, she has experience working in provincial and federal Canadian government agencies, academia, and the non-profit sector.
Valerie earned a B.Sc. at the Université de Montreal and an M.Sc. and Ph.D. at the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique in Quebec City. Her research has included the relationship between stream hydrology and thermal regimes, fish physiology and habitats, as well as tools development to support decision-making. She brings significant knowledge of Atlantic salmon habitat management, with a specific interest in climate change planning.
Valerie has worked in Ontario, Pennsylvania, and Birmingham, U.K. Most recently, she worked for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Maine, as a diadromous species scientist. There, she focused on thermal habitats, including cold water refuge, management, stream restoration and multispecies management.
Valerie will lead ASF’s five full-time research staff, helping carry on our long-term tracking research, and integrating the team into bold new programs like Wild Salmon Watersheds. She is fluent in English, French, and Spanish and comes to ASF with a rich network of contacts in the North American fisheries science community.
