LA 4 THOMAS MCGUANE BOGDAN REEL
This reel has quite the history related prior to its being auctioned here in Montreal this evening. Neither McGuane’s Bogdan, nor the split-bamboo fly rod it came with, were present at a fly-fishing dinner and auction (in Los Angeles) 45 years ago.
The donor states: “The bidding was made on a sight-unseen basis, for both the rod and reel. The reel was, and I figured that it would command quite a high price. And I had never heard of Tom McGuane (45 years ago). But, just for the heck of it, I raised my hand, and registered a bid of $125 45 years ago, $125 (to me) was a lot of money.”
“The auctioneer started droning the usual auction type chant, and I waited for another bid to show up — I would go a little higher, if necessary. But, to my amazement, there was no other bid — I guess that no angler at the dinner knew what a Bogdan reel was worth, nor did they want to bid on something that they could not see first. And they did not know who McGuane was either — he was an unknown writer at the time.”
“The word went around the western fly-fishing world that I had bought (won) this fly rod and reel, and about two months later, I got a phone call from Portland, Oregon. I did not know the person, but he quickly told me that he had heard of the auction and was interested in my purchase. The unknown caller was interested in the rod, and not the Bogdan reel!!! I described the rod over the phone, and, to my amazement, he offered $200 for it, which I quickly accepted — I had just made a profit of $75, and still had the Bogdan. And, according to eBay, those same size (and age) Bogdans are selling for over $6,000 today.”
This engraved reel with such a great story is a Model 0 right hand reel and includes a handwritten letter from the original owner.
