NL reinstates Northern Harvest Licenses

May 7, 2020

The company that owns a fish farm where hundreds of thousands of salmon died last year has its licences back.

Northern Harvest Sea Farms, a division of MOWI, temporarily lost its licences for failing to disclose to the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources in a timely manner all information regarding the mass mortality event in Fortune Bay.

Fisheries Minister Gerry Byrne says MOWI has established numerous protocols and practices to better prevent or mitigate a similar event.

The decision to reinstate the licences followed both the Marine Institute’s independent review of the mortality event, as well as the Mi’kmaq Alsumk Mowimsikik Koqoey Association’s (MAMKA) post-mortality environmental monitoring report.

The department says the company must abide by departmental policies and conditions before restocking occurs on the 10 affected sites.
