Salmon poaching in Gander Lake leads to foot chase, arrests

CBC News Posted: Jul 08, 2015 12:42 PM NT

Two men have been charged for illegally netting salmon in Gander Lake.

The Department of Justice and Public Safety said officers were on an early morning foot patrol on July 3 when they saw two people setting a net near the mouth of Southwest River.

The officers called for help and then hunkered down around 5:30 a.m. to see what would happen. That's when they saw the men one of whom had his face covered with a mask retrieve the net from a canoe.

Both have been charged under the Fisheries Act and could face criminal charges. The department says the pair are already known to enforcement officials.

The men's canoe, net, disguise and duffle bag, as well as 11 Atlantic salmon were seized as a result of the bust.
