Forteau River, Pinware, Eagle River, Sandhill River, English River, Paradise River, Flowers River Location: Labrador Report Date: July 29th, 2010 River Condition: For the past two weeks water levels have been high on most rivers in Southern Labrador and Northern Labrador. Currently, water levels on rivers in Southern Labrador are pretty good but remain high on rivers in Northern Labrador. Water temperatures are good on all rivers. River Run: Returns to the Frteau River have improved during the past two weeks and are about average for this time of year according to Cecil Butt, head guide at the Forteau Lodge. However, returns appear to be down significantly on rivers to the North of the Pinware based on DFO counting fence reports. For example on the Sand Hill River only 1329 fish passed through the counting fence as of July 25 compared to the previous five year average of 3790 for the same time perion. This represents a reduction of %75. Counts are also down substantially on English River and Paradise River for this same time period. Some reports blame late ice conditions along the Labrador coast during early July and the aboriginal net fishery for these declines. Success: Cecil Butt reports real good fishing on the Forteau River last week with their guests easily catching their daily limits most days. Flowers River Lodge owner, Jim Burton, reports that really high water levels have limited angling opportunities on Flowers River during the last couple of weeks but catches of grilse and large salmon are improving daily as water levels slowly recede on Flowers River.
