Smolt Wheel in Fast Current Smolt wheels sample the young salmon as they migrate downstream, gently lifting and placing them into a holding tank. Researchers check the tank each day, examine the smolt, weigh them, and take a scale sample for historical and DNA analysis - and then release the smolt to continue its migration down to the ocean.
