Actually an incompletely fused pair of kidneys, is at the top of the body cavity, just below the spine. The Kidney allows the wild salmon not only to concentrate and expel liquid wastes. More remarkably, it has to reverse the way it functions for the wild Atlantic salmon to survive in fresh water and in salt water. How it does so is still incompletely understood. |
