Circle Fish Cover Wins Award
May 23rd, 2010
The Atlantic Salmon Federation is pleased to announce that our flagship publication, the Atlantic Salmon Journal was honored at the Atlantic Journalism Awards in Halifax this past weekend, receiving the Silver Award for excellence and achievement in the Atlantic Magazine – Best Cover category for the Spring 2009 issue of the magazine.
The winning cover featured a spectacular, leaping Atlantic salmon sculpture and was the result of a well-coordinated, collaborative effort involving many ASF members, staff and professionals. Much credit must go to Donald Christ, a Director of ASF (US) member whose feature article “A Circle Unbroken” inspired the cover.
Photographer and conservationist Mitch Campbell originally captured the remarkable moment of a leaping, 30-lb, wild Atlantic salmon on film in 2000. The idea so captivated Gordon Gund, a blind sculptor, that he used the image as his model and through a painstaking process, created the head-to-tailfin, 50-lb bronze replica. It was donated to the New York Dinner auction, and the funds it raised are now contributing to safeguarding this magnificent fish.
The cover was originally conceptualized by our Journal team, Martin Silverstone and Irene Pohle. With the help of New York Dinner organizer Jill Alcott, they organized an ad hoc shoot in the Boston home of another Board of Director member, John Houghton, who had purchased the piece at the New York Dinner. On short notice and with the Spring deadline looming, photographer Porter Gifford took the breathtaking image for the cover in Houghton’s living room using no studio props or backdrops.
Budget constraints dictated that only one cover could be entered in the magazine contest. The award demonstrates that, although resources available to a non-profit organization are limited, there is certainly no limit to the creativity, passion, and teamwork of ASF members, volunteers, and staff in supporting a very worthwhile cause. Donald Christ perhaps put it best when he wrote in the final paragraph of his story:
“Lifelong friendships are forged in the pursuit of Salmo salar. When one special fish and moment can be preserved forever, it makes such bonds eternal. Perhaps that is the true magic of the circle fish sculpture. It keeps the spirit of a man who saw and understood the true value of wild Atlantic salmon and free-flowing rivers. And it can to do all this through the hands and heart of a blind man, but not unseeing, angler and friend.”
This Silver Award, representing excellence and achievement, helps to complete the circle.
