Escapee Salmon in Southern Newfoundland

DFO has found significant numbers of escaped farmed salmon in the lowermost Garnish River on the Burin Peninsula in Newfoundland.

The fact that at least a couple of dozen have been retrieved indicates that significant numbers did escape, although DFO downplays this aspect. The concern is for wild Atlantic salmon in the south coast region, where the salmon runs are presently being considered for THREATENED STATUS under Canada's species at risk law.
